Re:
Community
Mapping and Survey Project
Many
of you have expressed
interest in information
and data reports tailored
to your communities, especially
reports that will support
your activities to prevent
or intervene with crime
in your neighborhoods.
In 2006,
SNG worked with a researcher
from the University of
Washington to design community
safety surveys, collect
demographic data and to
perform an observational
survey of the communities
represented in South Park,
White Center, the Central
Area, Capitol Hill, Rainier
Valley and West Seattle.
The observational surveys
were conducted in July
and August, 2006 by UW
graduate students working
as two-person teams. The
community surveys were
distributed and available
for on-line input last
summer and fall.
The
demographic information
collected and the observational
survey information is
very interesting and should
be very informative for
your planning activities.
The survey information
collected is less valid,
but still informative.
We worked hard to get
a representative sample
for the
surveys, but were more
successful in some communities
than others.
Please
note that within
each community cluster
we focused our study on
those census tracts with
the highest aggregate
rates of the following
crime types: weapons,
drugs, assault, residential
burglary and vandalism.
I hope
you find this information
helpful and I would appreciate
your feedback.
